Since the revision of the WFI monograph 0169 of the European Pharmacopoeia in 2017, WFI can be produced in Europe using the membrane process.
The membrane process is ecologically and economically more efficient than a thermal process. It relies on reverse osmosis and electrodeionization in combination with ultrafiltration. The lower costs compared to thermal processes and the safe separation of endotoxins and bacteria speak clearly in favor of membrane technology. Operators can align their production at different locations, as cold WFI generation in e.g. B. USA and Japan has been established for some time. Modern systems for cold WFI generation are developed, built and validated according to GAMP and fully compliant with the latest ISPE, USP and Ph Eur specifications.
