EDE, THE NETHERLANDS

The client

  • 300,000 PE (people equivalent)
  • Located in the central Netherlands
  • Operated by Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe
  • 2 process lines with 2 process tanks in each line - total volume : 36,000m3
  • 6 secondary clarifiers - total surface area : 9,225m2

The challenges

  • Increased plant load over several years, leading to non-compliance with EU effluent standards.
  • 20% increase in plant load expected over the next 5 years.
  • To address this, Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe had to either extend the plant by a third process line or find another way to optimize capacity and increase treatment efficiency.

The solution

  • To avoid or postpone a costly extension of the plant, the WWTP implemented an online control system for optimizing biological treatment capacity.
  • The system is a holistic and data-driven digital solution called Hubgrade Wastewater Plant Performance.
  • Hubgrade provides real-time optimization of process efficiency and replaced the former PLC-based online control
  • The system offers a global overview in a web-browser user interface.
  • The implementation of Hubgrade Wastewater Performance Plant (HWP) resulted in the following benefits:
    • Ensured compliant effluent, below EU’s quality standards
    • Reduced environmental impact by reducing total-N and total-P in effluent
    • Minimized operational expenses on energy and chemicals
    • Significantly reduced capital investment by avoiding the construction of a new line.

KEY FIGURES

  • Duration: 12 years
  • Type: BioDenipho design
  • M3 treated per day: 40,000
  • 40% increase in hydraulic capacity
  • 35% reducing Total-N in effluent (while the plant load increase by 38% in the last 10 years)
  • > 10M€ CAPEX saved by deferring extra line building
