Helgeland Smolt

Helgeland Smolt is a newly completed facility for the production of post-smolt up to 500 g and consists of six rearing departments and a hatchery. All the departments, including the hatchery, are operated on Kaldnes® RAS systems. The four Grow-out departments can be operated with up to 20‰ salinity and are equipped with deep shaft oxygen cones to minimalize energy consumption.


The facility has been designed to be operator-friendly with respect to the layout, level of automation and flexibility. The facility is ultra-compact with optimum utilization of the available floor space. Energy consumption has been kept to a minimum using heat exchange with seawater, energy reuse from degassing and optimized control systems.

Project Implementation

Helgeland Smolt was listed as a new location near Tjongsfjorden in Rødøy municipality. The construction began immediately after the contract was signed and the building was constructed in a very short period. The eggs were introduced to the hatchery 15 months after signing of the contract, exactly on schedule. The other departments were built consecutively and the final department was started on 1 February 2017. The facility became fully operational two and a half years after the signing of the contract.


The construction project team, consisting of HSE, mechanical and electrical personnel, were involved in the construction process right from the beginning and contributed to the process planning and trouble-shooting during the building process. The six departments had to be constructed in a very short time period and coordination on the construction site was one of the key factors that led to the completion of the facility in record time. The Helgeland Smolt team also participated actively in the project and provided several good inputs during the construction phase.

 

Major Components

The Kaldnes® RAS water treatment system consists of five major process components:

Mechanical Particle Separation

The Hydrotech™ drumfilters remove particles and suspended matter from the water, both from fish feed and fish feces.

Biological Filtration

Dissolved and particulate organic matter and ammonia are degraded by bacteria and microorganisms in a two-stage Kaldnes MBBR biofilter.

Degassing

Carbon dioxide produced by fish respiration is removed in a centralized CO2 degasser and N2 is reduced in a separate degasser. The heat from the exit gas is reused.

Oxygenation

The water is oxygenated before it is returned to the fish tanks. In the two smallest departments, a small portion of the recirculating stream is supersaturated with oxygen using high-pressure oxygen cones, while in the other departments, the entire recirculating stream is oxygenated in deep shaft oxygen cones.

Automation

The entire facility, including the water treatment systems, lighting, oxygen and heat, is monitored and controlled by Veolia’s operating control system.

Footprint

The six Kaldnes® RAS systems are designed for a total feeding rate of 20 400 kg/day. The total footprint of the facility is 15 000 m2, of which 3000 m2 (or 20%) is occupied by the RAS systems.
