At the 2019 Aquaculture America Conference in New Orleans, Veolia aquaculture specialist, Chuck Blumenschein, presented “The Importance of Intake Water” and its impact on the economic success at large-scale aquaculture facilities.
Blumenschein presented some of the challenges related to intake water and how to mitigate risks when developing a large-scale RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) project. His presentation discussed the various intake water sources available and the characteristics that should be evaluated, such as total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, sulfate levels, and organic contaminants. He also reviewed various methods and technologies to treat the raw water to minimize the risk to fish health and a facility’s biosecurity.
“The stakes are high for emerging inland aquaculture companies. Understanding how water affects a RAS’s operation and the fish living inside of it can create competitive advantage for aquaculture companies,” said Blumenschein. He adds, “it’s important for aquaculture companies to partner with experienced RAS technology providers that have an in-depth understanding of aquaculture, water chemistry, and the various treatment technologies available.”
In addition to Blumenschein’s technical presentation, Veolia exhibited its portfolio of recirculating aquaculture technologies, including the RAS2020™, Veolia’s modular RAS designed to reduce capital costs, maximize production, minimize operating costs, and improve sustainability.
The 2019 Aquaculture America conference is an annual event hosted by the U.S. Aquaculture Society, National Aquaculture Association, and the Aquaculture Suppliers Association. The event welcomed more than 4,000 professionals and was held on March 7-11, 2019, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
