Ecodisk™

Ecodisk™ is a wastewater treatment system based on a rotating biodisc system. This biological treatment technology is specifically designed to address the needs of hotels, construction areas, campings, military bases and any other small to medium sized facilities, particularly those in remote areas. It is also suitable for municipal wastewater generated in isolated zones that are not connected to main sewer systems.

Ecological solution for domestic wastewater treatment plants from 100 to 10,000 PE.

Overview

Ecodisk provides biological treatment for domestic wastewater within a range of 100 and 10,000 population equivalent (PE). Developed by PMT — a subsidiary of Veolia Water Technologies — this modular and compact biological treatment solution can be easily integrated into a wastewater treatment system.

Upcoming wastewater can be fed through a simple pretreatment stage as screening before coming to the Ecodisk which serves as the main biological phase of the complete treatment. A minimal screening is suggested to remove big particles. Pretreatment can be enhanced with a process step such as grit and/or grease removal, primary settler or digester-settler.

How Ecodisc works

Ecodisk is a simple but efficient technology. Biodiscs are mounted on a shaft which is driven by a fixed speed motor. Discs are partially immersed in the effluent to be treated. The surface of the discs is then rotated (submerged and risen out of the wastewater). During the submersion phase, bacteria consume the pollutants such as carbon and nitrogen from the wastewater and then, once risen out of the water, the oxygen in air is consumed as a source to break down these pollutants.

Within this process, the bacteria grows on the surface of the discs and forms a kind of biofilm, also known as bioturf. The rotational speed of the biodiscs is therefore low to keep the bacteria attached. The excess amount of bacteria will be detached from the biodisc by rotational moments and gravitational force. The detached biofilm forms the sludge which will be extracted in the clarification/separation phase.

Biodiscs Ecodisk

After the degradation of the organic matter, a last step enables the clarification/separation of the treated water before its final discharge.

Depending on the specifications of the community, this clarification step can be based on a lamella settler, a drum filter or reed beds.
Ecodisk can also be connected to our digital solution, Hubgrade, enabling full remote monitoring as well as access to our expert service teams.

FAQ about Ecodisk

What is biological treatment for domestic wastewater ?

“Domestic wastewater is generated after ordinary human activity as food and liquid processing by the body itself. As a result of this process, water contains a large amount of organic fraction that should be degraded within nature itself.
Bacteria will use this organic fraction to develop their biomass. What humanity has discovered is that this natural process can be enhanced and accelerated by arranging some parameters around.
It is crucial to provide adequate treatment for these resulting waters before their discharge into nature, mainly in order to maintain the ecological balance and not harm the ecosystem.
With its simple but efficient approach, Ecodisk provides a robust wastewater treatment solution for small / medium communities.

How does Ecodisk facilitate water reuse?

“While reducing the pollutant content of water such as chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and ammonium, Ecodisk provides an advanced wastewater treatment approach especially for the small to medium scaled domestic wastewater market. ”

How should customers choose between EcosimTM and Ecodisk?

“Both technologies come from the same process family and both can be customized to meet specific requirements by our technical department so it really depends on each customer’s needs. The key thing to remember is that Ecosim is more compact with a higher projected surface area but within a restricted footprint. Whereas, Ecodisk has a smaller surface area for the same footprint and it can feature up to five biological tanks within the same module. This means it can provide a higher retention time than Ecosim. Our expert team can help you to choose the most appropriate solution to fit your needs.”

Case studies

France
Ostabat Asme - Municipal

The customer had already purchased an Ecodisk Filter in 2016, to manage its wastewater in a mountainous area. However, after five years, the local discharge regulations had become stricter and the population of the community had almost doubled. The customer needed to enhance its operations focused on advanced  carbon and ammonia removal within a very limited footprint and a combined Ecodisk and drum filter surpassed this customer's needs.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA) - Tourism

A town located on the north-western outskirts of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, began work to renew the historic city and turn it into a cultural epicenter to encourage tourism. The project, set in a peri-urban commune, needed separate construction sites throughout the region and therefore also required unitary wastewater treatment plants for the local workers. Ecodisk, with its compactness, low electrical consumption and simple operation was chosen to ensure a minimum daily capacity of 20 cubic meters per day.

France
Grésy-sur-Isère - Municipal

The customers’ main driver was to treat the municipal wastewater of the local community in a simple and efficient way without the construction of a dedicated sewage line since it was quite isolated. Ecodisc was able to deliver this in addition to giving the customer greater resilience against seasonal load variations and no noise or odor concerns while integrating with its landscape.
