Marquette-lez-Lille - France

Zero Pollution, 100% Responsability

The new Marquette-lez-Lille wastewater treatment plant, one of the largest in France, is built to answer the needs of a growing population, according to the highest sustainability and technology standards.

Building a new city-center wastewater treatment plant to meet the growing needs of the population, comply with European standards and cater for sustainable development issues was the challenge set to OTV, subsidiary of Veolia Water Technologies, by the Urban Community of Lille Metropole, in northern France.
The plant will generate a low carbon footprint and produce biogas.

As early as 2013, it will meet the requirements of the European Directive on the good ecological status of water.
It will be integrated into the landscape by architects, including a 7 hectare park.

State-of-the-art design and technologies

The plant will have the capacity to treat wastewater from an equivalent population of 620,000.
It will feature two separate treatment trains, one for wastewater (2.8 m3/s) and one for stormwater (5.3 m3/s). The stormwater will be treated in the patented Actiflo- ballasted flocculation process, while the wastewater will successively be treated by:

  • Multiflo, a lamellar settler used as primary treatment for suspended solids removal
  • Hybas, a biological treatment hybrid technology combining the best of two well-known technologies: activated sludge and AnoxKaldnes  MBBR
  • Hydrotech Discfilters, used as tertiary treatment to polish the effluent

Sludge treatment optimized to produce biogas

For sludge treatment, the implementation of Exelys, a new thermal hydrolysis process from Veolia, will reduce the quantity of sludge produced by 20-40% and increase the production of biogas by 15-30% compared to a standard digestion.

After being dried in a BioCon dryer and stored, half of the sludge will be used in agriculture and the other half in a cement works.

Odour control

As the Marquette-lez-Lille plant is located in a densely populated urban area, particular care has also been taken in dealing with noise and odours.

OTV's offer includes full treatment and surveillance of noise and odour emissions, notably in a 7 hectare park adjacent to the plant.
