Saint-Alban – EDF nuclear power plant is one of the 20 nuclear power production sites in France.

 

The Client’s Needs

The unscheduled shutdown of one of the two units of the plant combined with a scheduled shutdown of the other unit led the power plant to restart both units almost simultaneously in the winter, when the energy demand is high. These restarts require a lot of demineralized water and this accidental situation resulted in an under-production of water and the plant had to resort to external resources.

 

Project & Technology Solutions

Veolia Water Technologies STI provided 4 semitrailers (MODI SOS) within 48 hours, then another one (MODI 15000) the next day and a sixth one 48 hours later with the almost continuous assistance of specialized technicians to produce 5,100 m3 of water, allowing EDF to start the first unit within 72 hours and the second one 48 hours later.
 

Results

The availability of MODI SOS and MODI 15000 trailers allowed EDF to restore its demineralized water stock and fully withstand the overconsumption associated with the almost simultaneous restart of two nuclear units.
 
  • Treatment: Strong cation + Strong anion Ion-exchange resin on MODI SOS trailer with mixed-bed polishing to produce water with a conductivity < 1μS/cm.
  • Services: Commissioning by local Veolia’s Mobile Water Services team, on-site presence 80% of the time.
